Functions of vitamin A :

There are 3 active forms of vitamin A

  • Retinoic acid
  • Retinaldehyde
  • b-carotene

1)   Retinal has a role in Vision : In the pigment epithelium of the retina, all-trans-retinol is isomerized to 11-cis-retinol and oxidized to 11-cis-retinaldehyde. This binds to opsin to form rhodopsin, the visual pigment of the rod cells in the retina involved in vision and dark adaptation to light.

2)   Retinoic acid has a role in regulation of gene expression and tissue differentiation : Retinoic acid regulate growth, development and tissue differentiation. Hence it controls cell differentiation and turnover & maintain the health of epithelial cells of skin and mucus membrane. Retinoic acid binds to response elements of DNA and regulate the transcription of specific genes. Maintain the health of epithelial cells of skin and mucus membrane.

3)  b-carotene is an antioxidant and have possible roles in atherosclerosis and cancer prevention.

4)   Vitamin A has been known to have beneficial effects on immunity against infection. Animal studies have shown that vitamin A influence the number and nature of WBC that migrate into a wound, increasing a proportion of monocytes and macrophages.
