Constipation and its Remedies or Treatment

It is a common problem is a patient complaint in clinical practice.

Constipation is defined as frequency of defecation less than 3 times per week .subjective complain should also be consider like hard stools, excessive straining, lower abdominal fullness, and sense of incomplete evacuation. Thus a combination of objective and subjective criteria must be used to be in defining constipation.


Causes:  Disorder colonic transit, Anorectal function as a result of primary motility disturbance, certain drugs, or in association with a large number of systemic diseases that affect the GIT.
It can be due to physical or mental impairment, or due to physical immobility.
Contributing factors are lack of fiber in diet, generalized muscle weakness, stress and anxiety

Treatment:
Treatment is generally individualized, taking into account of the duration and severity of constipation.

Potential contributing factors: Age of patient, patient expectation initial therapy is usually dietary, emphasis on dietary fiber intake.

 Fiber supplementation is not appropriate for patients with obstructing lesions of the GIT or with megacolon, Megarectum.

Bulk forming laxative: psyllium or synthetic polysaccharide or cellulose derivatives that act in a manner similar to fiber fluid intake should be increased with the use of these preparations.

Emollient laxative mineral oil: these are given orally or by enema penetrate and soften the stool, docusate salts, lower the surface tension thereby softens the stool.

Hyper molar agent: mixed electrolyte solutions containing polyethylene glycol and nonasborable sugar such as lactulose and sorbital act as osmotic agent used to clean bowel.


Stimulant laxative: castor oil, anthraquinones it stimulate intestinal secretion and increases intestinal mobility.
