Loss of hunger (appetite )is a common problem encounter by doctor these days.

Is anorexia is same as anorexia nervosa?

Loss of appetite or anorexia is decrease in one’s desire to eat where as in anorexia nervosa there is a frightening psychological eating disorder young women starves themselves.

What causes appetite loss?
Often it’s the symptoms of an underlying health problem or a side effect of a particular drug, deficiencies of nutrients like thiamine, niacin, vitamin B12 , and zinc can contribute to appetite loss.

 Clinical study has shown that people experiencing loss of appetite ate more and gained significant weight when they took zinc supplement.

A variety of illness can trigger appetite loss including cancer digestive tract disorders, infectious disease even cold

Why there is a loss of appetite in sickness?
Illness related appetite losses are complex to explain .But one way of looking at is that when  you are sick, your body has to invest so much of its energy in restoring health that it skips on other things like triggering a sensation of hunger.

Appetite loss can also triggered by variety of medication such as depressant amphetamines
How ever alcohol consumption is the chief culprits.1-2 drinks increases appetite however more than that can reduce the appetite.

Chemotherapy drug decreases appetite.

Why there is reduction in appetite after certain age?

The general decline in appetite after certain age is due to gradual decline in smells and taste sensation.

Aroma of food makes you feel hungry as you dig in , you taste buds dances with the flavor of the tasty meal.This send a message to your GIT tract to release stomach acids and digestive enzymes so they are ready when foods comes there way.

In case of smokers the sense of taste and smell becomes less sharp. So in smokers there sharp decline in appetite.
So how can it be increased?
Bitters like gentian, wormwood, bitter orange peel blessed thistle cinchona bark .

Bitters in general increases salivary secretion and stomach acids.
To make tea, pour freshly boiled water over 1 to 3 teaspoons of dry herbs. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes then strain. Drink up to 4 cups a day.

1 teaspoon tincture of wormwood before eating increases appetite
Bitter orange peel, cinnamon, coriander, fenugreek, hop, and horehound.  You can make a tea from any of these using 1 to 2teaspoons of herb per cup of freshly boiled water. Steep for 10 to 20  minutes, strain and drink before meals. (make sure it has cooled adequately, so you don’t burn yourself.)


Aromatic herbs: Aroma therapists generally recommend sniffing one of the following essential oils, basil, caraway, chamomile, coriander, fennel ,garlic ,ginger, lavender, lemon. These increase appetite.
